FR Skates (FRX, FRW, FR1, FR2 and FR3) look a lot alike other than in price. You are not alone in wondering what the difference is. To keep it simple we compared the stock 4x80mm packages of each. Many are offered with other frame and wheel setups (i.e. 4x90, 3x110, 3x125) but this still allows you to take away differences in the boot.

The lowest price and the best value. The FRW is the same skate but targets female skaters in color(s) and a liner with a lower cut in the back to accommodate differences in calf muscle. FRX is shown in men’s and the FRW in women’s sizing, but they can be used by all so go with whichever colors speak to you.
Lateral frame adjustment is possible without needing metal mounting plates. Adjustments beyond that are not common so it is arguable as to if value is added. There is more efficient energy transfer gained but only skilled skaters are likely to notice an enormous difference. Teh ratchet buckle at the 45-degree position is nice although a Velcro strap does the job.
Extruded aluminum is stronger and stiffer than die cast frames for more efficient response and energy transfer, but this too may not be noticed much other than by highly skilled skaters. Adjustable cuff bolts can customize support and feel, although most will skate as they come out of the box. The Downtown Wheel is a good upgrade on the wheel side of things.
4D Frames are very well-liked but an argument can be made whether these are an ‘upgrade’ from a frame already made with extruded aluminum. The 4D is also not rockerable, so one would have to place most of the value in upgrades to the wheels and bearings.
Deluxe or Intuition models have Intuition Liners instead of the stock FR Liner. Intuition brand liners cost about $220 on their own and offer a considerable upgrade.
In addition to being a better liner, Intuition Liners are also lower in volume. This allows you to fit into a smaller shell size to get not only a more precise and responsive fit, but a lighter one as well! For these reasons, there is definite value in getting your FR in a Deluxe or Intuition when available.
It is subjective as to which boot and features add value, but with it all laid out like above, it makes the decision easier. Excluding the FRW, all FR Skates are sold without a brake (sold separately). Be sure to grab one if needed so that you can skate hard and skate safe.
