Plate Sizing Guide

aka What Size Plate Do I Need?

By DW Staff | Updated: February 2020

Quick Steps

  1. Navigate to the product page for your boot by using the search bar or browsing our Boots Page.
  2. Determine the recommended wheelbase for your boot size by referencing the boot's Size Chart.
2b. If you cannot find your boot on our site, measure your previous plate's wheelbase (center of front axle to center of the back axle, in millimeters).
  3. Use the Size Chart on the plate's product page to determine the wheelbase that is closest to the one recommended for your boot.

Detailed Instructions

Using Recommended Wheelbase

Begin by identifying the brand, model, and size of the boot that you would like to attach to your new plate. The goal is to determine the recommended wheelbase for that boot and then choose the plate with the most similar wheelbase. Wheelbase is the distance between the front axle and back axle of an assembled plate. It is also the most reliable way to match boots with plates of a different brand.

Example of Wheelbase Measurement

Most current boot models and all plates will have wheelbase information clearly listed in Sizing Charts that are found on each product page. It's best to have both your boot and desired plate open to quickly reference both charts. Then, once you have the recommended wheelbase of the boot, find out which plate size most closely matches it and voila! If you end up evenly split between two plate sizes, we typically recommend sizing down.

Using Previous Wheelbase

As an alternative to using your boot's recommended wheelbase, you could measure your current wheelbase and choose the same size for your new plate. This can be effective if you are mounting an older boot model that may not have up-to-date charts or if you know that you love your current wheelbase and don’t want to change it. As always, our friendly staff is always more than happy to assist with any questions or concerns about plate sizing.

Different Kinds of Mounts

The sizing information that is provided, unless specifically noted, is intended for traditional back-heel mounts or very-slightly forward mounts (aka sport or agility mounts). If you would like a short-forward or particularly aggressive sport mount you will likely need to adjust from the chart recommendation. Some plates, like Sure-Grip’s Avengers, are intended for short-forward. Always research any plate that you are considering!

Caution: Margin of Error

Plate sizing is almost entirely based off of manufacturer-provided sizing charts and plate specifications. Different plates don't always use the same sizing methodology, even within a single brand! As a result, there is a significant margin of error with plate sizing that may result in shorter or longer plates than intended. Don't worry! Derby Warehouse accepts returns and exchanges of any new, unused plates.

Roll-Line Plates

Sure Grip Plates

The classic Avenger Plates are unique due to the short-forward mounting and steep kingpin angles that make for an extremely responsive ride. Avanti Plates are more traditional low-degree plates that are a bit more stable. Both plates are available in Magnesium and Aluminum alloys - the former being lighter and stronger. And for a wide variety of skating disciplines, the LoRide Plate allows skaters to dictate the plate's height with installable risers.
